Next year, banks will publish guidelines on how much cash people should keep at home for emergencies, according to the Dutch Banking Association (NVB), as reported by ANP.
Preparing for War Scenarios
This advice follows statements by Defense Minister Brekelmans on the TV program WNL on Sunday.
He emphasized that the Netherlands should prepare for various war scenarios, including the disruption of internet, electricity, and water services.
Brekelmans advised people to always have some cash at home in case electronic payment systems temporarily fail.
Expected Guidelines
The NVB indicates that banks are working on specific recommendations for the amount of cash, the different denominations, and the potential benefits of having an extra bank account or credit card.
Since discussions have yet to begin, no specific details are available at the moment, but a suitable recommendation is expected after the turn of the year.
Emergency Preparedness
This advice aligns with existing government recommendations to have an emergency kit at home for situations such as power outages. In addition to cash, it is advised to have a flashlight, batteries, candles, and a battery-operated radio.
Safety of Cash
However, keeping too much cash at home is discouraged as it could attract burglars. Household insurance policies typically cover cash at home up to an amount of 250 to a maximum of 500 euros.
